Dr. Bill Meyer, co-founder of Raleigh’s premier fertility clinic, Carolina Conceptions, cautioned fertility patients considering the black market as a means to save money on fertility medications in a recent interview with ABC.
Dr. Meyer understands the financial struggle patients are faced with when IVF treatment can cost from $10,000-$20,000+ for one cycle (including medications). However, he is concerned with the risks patients may not be aware of when “buying blind.”
Dr. Meyer stated concerns over medication consistency, storage and expiration dates. For those turning to Canada and Europe for less expensive medication, Dr. Meyer noted the risk that drugs from other countries may not meet FDA guidelines for safety in the U.S. and could potentially be stopped by customs from coming into the country.
