About Callie Barnwell Gibson, Embryologist

Callie Barnwell Gibson, Ph.D., TS (ABB) at Carolina Conceptions | Raleigh, NC

A North Carolina native, Callie was born and raised in Asheville. Early on she developed a love for animals and an interest in biology and genetics. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from North Carolina State University, with a minor focus in genetics and microbiology. During this time, she participated in several undergraduate research projects involving extremophile microorganisms and plant genetics. She then worked briefly as a research associate studying the genetics of speciation in drosophila.

Callie decided to pursue a career in reproduction and assisted reproductive technologies. She returned to North Carolina State University to earn her doctorate in physiology, with a minor in biotechnology. She designed and conducted research projects comparing global gene expression in day 15 bovine conceptuses derived from in vivo and in vitro produced embryos. She also investigated recipient serum progesterone concentration and early conceptus development in bovine embryos produced in vivo or in vitro. Callie had the pleasure of serving as a teaching assistant for the same introductory biology labs she took as an undergraduate.

Seeking a profession that would offer a more practical application of her interests, Callie joined Carolina Conceptions at the end of 2014. She enjoys seeing the combination of knowledge and technical skill translate into immediate benefits for patients.

Callie Barnwell Gibson has her Doctor of Philosophy and is certified as a technical supervisor (TS) in embryology.
